Halloween buffer group shot along the Musky

Some 27 volunteers helped to plant well over 200 native trees and shrubs along the Hunterdon bank of the Musconetcong in Holland Twp. across from the former Hughesville Fiber Mark paper mill on Halloween morning.  Members from many chapters, led by our E. Schweibert chapter, came out in support of this effort, and lots of hands made for quick work with volunteers having to wait for the Warrenside Tavern to open after they were done.

As is sometimes the case with our riparian buffer plantings, some of the local neighbors were concerned about losing their view of the river, having been the ones that cut down the trees and shrubs in this location in past years.  Education of the public on the need to protect the river is always a top priority of our Home Rivers Initiatives and this effort last Saturday was no different!  Letters were sent to the 6 homeowners along Willow Lane in advance informing them of the impending work and explaining the need for this project.  At least 2 of these neighbors were very supportive of TU’s efforts.

This will likely be the last major planting of this year with plenty of new projects in the works for 2010 and beyond.

Some more photos from the morning’s work.  All photos courtesy of Bill Hannisch, Ernie Schweibert TU chapter.  Many thanks to Bill for overseeing this planting project on behalf of our Schweibert chapter and for all our volunteers who gave of their time to come out and help!

Busy at work! Always great to see the younger generation pitching in to help their Dads!
